What We Do Answering the call -- one horse at a time
Second Call, founded in 2012, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Thoroughbred Adoption and Placement Program dedicated to New Jersey’s off-the-track Thoroughbreds. Serving as the exclusive "After Care Program" for Monmouth Park, the mission is to assist, and ensure that retired racehorses find a SECOND calling and/or /profession. Thoroughbreds accepted into the program are rested, evaluated, and re-acclimated. They are then transitioned to proven trainers with a financial stipend from Second Call who retrain and prepare the former race horses for their new tasks. Every effort is made to ensure successful, long-term placements.
Our business model allows us to focus specifically on the local racing jurisdiction that gives back so much to our communities. By aligning with Monmouth Park and its horsemen, we can channel all our resources and activities where they are needed the most. We feel this approach enables us to build better relationships and serve the horses and riders more effectively.

Team Second Call strongly believes in giving each and every horse the gift of time. We are never in a rush to get the horses back to work. Our motto around the barn is "slow and steady heals the horse."
Once the horse has completely returned to a 100% healthy body and mind and our vet has cleared the horse for riding, the next step is to begin retraining under saddle. We then transfer the horse to an approved 501c3 Thoroughbred program that specialize in training and adoption. The horse is then transferred into that adoption program with a stipend of $1500.
This $1500 covers the cost of care and training while the horse is awaiting an adoptor. The intention of the stipend is to alleviate the financial burden on the adoption programs while our horses are being retrained and look for adoption. SCTAP also requests that the adoption programs provide us with the contact and all relevant information regarding each horse's placement in their new families once the adoptions are deemed successful.
Check out Irish Latearrival, seen here at a dressage schooling show. Irish was a bit of an "ugly duckling" before settling into his permanent, loving home. He was passed over for a while before finding his perfect match, where he has blossomed into a true winner! A winner at the track, and now a winner at dressage. Oh, by the way, he can jump too!!!
